I am from rice, From family dinners and catholic school uniforms. I am from the blood, sweat, and tears that it took for me to get here. (long nights, lots of caffeine, I’m still catching up today) I am from the salt water The country music Whose concerts I often attend and still remember As if it were yesterday. I’m from shopping and Atlanta Falcons football From Catahans and Smiths. I’m from the never let them see you crys And the focus on schools, From sit up straight and take small bites! I’m from Glory to God in the highest With a Sunday dress And lots of Friday fish fries. I’m from Rosita and Teddy’s branch, Night shifts at the hospital and sitting in the stands at basketball games. From the time my aunt died in a car accident To the time my dad comforted me during my first of many heartbreaks. On top of my bookshelf was a journal Spilling of painful words, A memory of past mistakes To overcome those struggles. I am from those triumphs--- Those wipe away your tears and come back strongers- Pulling myself back up and moving on.
